Life as an institution

Sometimes, you just want to die. Well, not literarily. But, sometimes, the world just spins on without you.

“People, we strive for freedom! We yea-rrr-n towards it! Does anyone feel like that? As you get older, do you think you are becoming more and more liberated?” Our philosophy lecturer paced up and down the classroom, with passion, of course.

The girl who sat next to me nodded eagerly.

Erm, I don’t know what you are on, honey… but I certainly do not feel that way.

These days, the word society is inevitably tied in with constraints. The older we get, the more we learn about our society, and the more constrained we are by social expectations. ‘Why don’t you get a job?’ ‘Why aren’t you married?’ ‘Do you plan to have kids?’ Sound familiar? At every stage of your life, there is that constant voice telling you what needs to be done, where you should be. At every circumstance, there are a standard of ideal that you are being judged by.

It is in this process of getting older, society convicts you with responsibilities and expectations. Where is that bit of freedom that is supposedly my?

life is so much simpler when you're young and free...and haven't yet been told what is expected of you...

Yes, I agree. People often don't appreciate the freedom when they are young.
